The issue of food losses and waste and its determinants
Aleksandra Kowalska
1
Maria Curie-Skłodowska University, Lublin, Poland
Background: The study was initiated because managing the problem of food losses and waste seems to be essential in terms of reducing pressure on natural environment, growing world population, millions of undernourished people, and economic wellbeing of food operators. The aim of the paper is to analyze and evaluate the problem of food losses and waste, and its consequences. The author has made an attempt to indicate the main determinants of this phenomenon and identify areas of improvement to prevent and combat food losses and waste more effectively.
Materials and results: The paper is based on recent literature review, professional research and publications, data collected by FAO and EUROSTAT, EC technical report and regulations. Analysis based on the literature review, secondary data sources and Internet sources helped to indicate the main determinants of FLW and to identify some areas of improvement in preventing and combating FLW. The paper by Kołożyn-Krajewska et al. was the main inspiration for the author to make an extended list of determinants of FLW.
Conclusions: Food losses and waste are highly unethical while millions of people are undernourished worldwide. FLW means that resources used in food production have been used in vain. FLW places an unnecessary burden on the environment. The author underlines that the extent, causes and prevention of food losses and waste are different in low, medium and high income countries. The author divides the determinants of food losses and waste into two groups: determinants occurring along a food chain and external conditions effecting FLW. Coherence of food losses and food waste definitions and data collecting are indispensable for proper estimation and effective prevention of the problem.

Assessing measures of energy efficiency improvement opportunities in the industry
Aldona Kluczek
1
Warsaw University of Technology, Warsaw, Poland
Background: Energy efficiency has recently become one of the key aspects in the manufacturing sector. The facilities should improve their performance due to the related economic costs and the significant environmental impacts. The objective of this paper is to prove that energy efficiency of opportunities for energy savings improvements provided by the energy auditors are efficient. These opportunities represent technical actions recommended in the U.S. industrial plants over time period 2013 to 2014. Moreover, these technologies are considered as efficient ones based on energy audits results. Therefore, only ten suggested recommendations are included in the analyses.
Methods: The paper demonstrates a DEA- Slack Based Measurement approach to evaluate the energy efficiency of the recommended technical solutions. This study is built upon the results of energy audits carried out by the author with the Industrial Assessment Center`s experts at the University of Michigan.
Results: The results confirms that seven audit`s energy-effective improvements are still efficient, compared with those of the DEA-SBM method outcomes. The paper reveals inefficiencies of three industrial plants, which were considered as efficient ones examined individually in energy audit procedure. Moreover, the results are enriched with the additional analysis of input excesses and output shortfalls.
Conclusions: Based on the study of the recommended solutions in the U.S. industrial plants, more effective technologies (DMU2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10) are identified, along with the ranking of the recommended solutions used. The SBM model described in this paper allows a more accurate determination of which audit`s proposed technical improvements are energy efficient or not. Further work is required to develop a set of relative input and output variables as well as a way of variables selection using analytical methods which may make the measure more robust.

Warsaw University of Technology, Warsaw, Poland
Background: The aim of the article is to present the concept of integrated management of airport safety audit. Airports function in a dynamically changing environment. These changes are the result of EU legislative processes and the changes of safety risk profile. Therefore, it is necessary to search for new and effective methods of ensuring safety and security of airports.
Methods: The efficient and effective method seems to be an integrated safety audit. The concept of such has been developed on the basis of the ICAO and EASA regulations and ISO standards and guidelines for the management systems.
Results: Developed design of integrated safety airport audit is the first-party audit. It takes into account the currently applicable legal requirements concerning the management and certification of the airports, which aim is to ensure safety and security. The project involves the integration of management systems and refers to the issue of conversion Aerodrome Certificates.
Conclusion: So far established management systems and audit programs in civil aviation relate primarily to the safety and security issues of air transport. However, omitting the change management and the flow of means of transport and loading units at the airport issues, which conducive to the fluctuation and escalation of threats. It follows the need to extend the formula and the audit scope, which will continue in the further work of the author.

The impact of opening Berlin Brandenburg Willy Brandt Airport on the Polish aviation market
Wojciech Augustyniak

Poznań University of Economics and Business, Poznań, Poland
Introduction: In the past decade, the Polish airport market has seen an unprecedented increase in passenger numbers. Regional airports in the second half of the XX century functioned as monopolies in a market heavily typified by Chicago style bilateral contracts. Consequently, a "hub-and-spoke" system has been in operation, where the regional airports perform the role of first port of call for passengers flying into a hub. Open skies policy, as well as the emergence of low cost airlines in 2004 upgraded the status of regional airports to that of regular commercial ones. Many of these had the opportunity to report a profit for the first time, as well as being able to function in a competitive environment where they could directly compete with other airports both for new carriers, in order to expand their connection network, as well as for new passengers. In this environment, a key factor to success to an increasing extent has become the airport's position in the market in comparison to similar sized airports as well as in reference to developing hubs like Berlin.
Methods: Using information about network connections, the number and type of passengers at specific airports, flight times and distances to and from airports, a 2 hour isochrone analysis was carried out and 4D strategic maps were constructed. As a result of the data analysis it was possible to identify several market subgroups consisting of airports competing for the same passenger, network connection and/or geographical pr

Optimization in Fuzzy Economic Order Quantity (FEOQ) Model with Promotional Effort Cost and Units Lost Due To Deterioration
Padmabati Gahan

Sambalpur University, Sambalpur, India
Background: This model presents a significant model for analyzing the effect of deteriorating items and promotional effort in fuzzy optimal instantaneous replenishment model for finite planning horizon. Accounting for holding cost per unit per unit time and ordering cost per order have traditionally been the case of modeling inventory systems in fuzzy environment. These imprecise parameters defined on a bounded interval on the axis of real numbers and the physical characteristics of stocked items dictate the nature of inventory policies implemented to manage and control in the production system.
Methods: This model postulates the promotional effort cost to frame total inventory cost. Thus a modified fuzzy EOQ (FEOQ) model with promotional effort factor is introduced, it assumes that a percentage of the on-hand inventory is wasted due to deterioration and considered as an enhancement to EOQ model to determine the optimal promotional effort and the replenishment quantity so that the net profit is maximized. In theoretical analysis, the necessary and sufficient conditions of the existence and uniqueness of the optimal solutions are proved and further the concavity of the fuzzy net profit function is established. Computational algorithm using the software LINGO 13.0 version is developed to find the optimal solution.
Results and conclusions: The results of the numerical analysis enable decision-makers to quantify the effect of promotion policy on optimizing the net profit for the retailer and wasting the percentage of on-hand inventory due to deterioration respectively. Finally, sensitivity analyses of the optimal solution with respect the major parameters are also carried out. Furthermore fuzzy decision making is shown to be superior then crisp decision making without promotional effort in terms of profit maximization.

Background: The efficiency of logistics processes is a very important decision-making aspect, both from financial point of view as well as in terms of processes at the operational level. Taking into account both the specific features of a cold supply chain as well as conditions of the comprehensive analysis of the efficiency of logistics processes, the significant aspect is the elaboration of the concept, which will allow to monitor and estimate realized processes with the possibility to obtain date in real time.
The aim of this paper is to present the concept of monitoring of processes performed in a cold supply chain.
Methods: The results of researches conducted in Polish companies in the first half of 2016 year as well as the literature review show the unsatisfied level of the use of the analysis of efficiency of logistics processes. These results were used to select conditions influencing the complexity of the analysis of efficiency of logistics processes. The researches were conducted in 152 logistics companies located in Wielkopolska voivodship.
Results: The business product BluTrack of the Blulog company is the result of the elaborated concept. Various variants of the implementation of this tool in practice served as the methodology of the verification of the complexity of the implementation of this concept in monitoring and management of the cold supply chain.
Conclusions: The analysis of efficiency of logistics processes is still not unambiguously defined despite many scientific studies. It causes problems in the business practice. The uniqueness of the cold supply chain introduces additional variables and criteria of estimation of efficiency of logistics processes. The presented study put the main focus on the use of mobile technologies for efficient monitoring and evaluation of efficiency of logistics processes in the cold supply chain. The result of the verification of the presented concept was the preparation of the tool, having the desired functionalities for the business practice.
